Volunteer Radio will be hosting a Knoxville launch party and station fundraiser for MadTree Brewing Friday, March 23rd at Suttree’s High Gravity Tavern beginning at 6pm, featuring 8 different taps of MadTree craft beer. One dollar from each pint sold will go to the WUTK Gift Fund, and there will be Mad Tree glassware and swag giveaways, and valuable raffle prizes with donations benefitting Volunteer Radio.

Ever since 2010, when Gary Clark Jr. wowed audiences with electrifying live sets everywhere from the Crossroads Festival to Hollywood’s historic Hotel Café, his modus operandi has remained crystal clear: “I listen to everything…so I want to play everything.” The revelation that is the Austin-born virtuoso guitarist, vocalist and songwriter finds him just as much an amalgamation of his myriad influences and inspirations. Anyone who gravitated towards Clark’s, 2011’s Bright Lights EP, heard both the evolution of rock and roll and a savior of blues. The following year’s full-length debut, Blak And Blu, illuminated Clark’s vast spectrum – “Please Come Home” is reminiscent of Smokey Robinson, while “Ain’t Messin’ Around” recalls Sly and the Family Stone. 2014’s double disc Gary Clark Jr–Liveprojected Clark into 3D by adding palpable dimension and transcendent power –– songs soared and drifted from the epic, psychedelic-blues of “When My Train Comes In” to his anthemic, hip-hop, rock-crunch calling card, “Bright Lights”, all the way down to the deep, dark, muddy water of “When The Sun Goes Down”.

There are a handful of folks who have informed for the mélange of genres and styles, which comprise the genius of Clark. One is Michael Jackson. It was on Denver stop of MJ’s Bad Tour where a four-year-old Gary’s life was altered after witnessing The King of Pop. By the sixth grade, Clark would own his first set of strings (Ibanez RX20).

WUTK Fundraiser at The Basement Art Studio, 6:30 pm on Friday, March 2nd. Thanks to all that came. We raised a little over $200!!

We had a blast!  Thanks to Jen at Basement Art Studio, and all those that came.  We raised a little over $200.

WUTK is teaming up the The Basement Art Studio to bring you a night of art and fundraising! The main event will be a game called “Roll-a-Picasso,” which will be finished up with watercolor. After the event, everyone gets to take home their art piece.


For $20, you can gain entry with whatever beer and wine you care to carry in with you; art supplies will be provided.

There will also be a raffle where you can win concert tickets and gift cards: $5 gets you 3 tickets.

Plus there will be food from The Landing House restaurant and bar! The Landing House serves Cambodian, Chinese, and French inspired food and a homey atmosphere on Sevier Avenue in South Knox. Thanks to The The Basement Community Art Studio! Spread the word and come on down. Invite your friends! You can order tickets online or just show up at the door on Fri. March 2nd!

Cannabis Study: EARN MONEY as participant in new research study.

The University of Tennessee Center for Behavioral Health Research is currently seeking 100 participants for a study on text-based counseling for problematic marijuana use.

As part of the study, participants will complete surveys over 3 months about marijuana use, mental health, and friends, briefly participate in text message counseling and monthly surveys OR only complete monthly surveys, and attend 2 study visits on campus at Henson Hall.

To be eligible to participate, you must:

Be between 18 and 25 years old
Have problematic marijuana use (which will be determined by the study screening)
Have access to a text-message capable phone

All information collected from study participants is confidential and highly protected.

Participants will be compensated up to $150 over 3 months for their time and effort.
