“From its humble beginnings as the one day Azalea Festival in 1982, Oak Ridge’s Secret City Festival is evolving into one of the premier events in East Tennessee and has been expanded to encompass three weekends, June 2-17. A highlight of the event will be the weekend of June 9-10, with arts & crafts vendors, children’s programming, and concerts by locally revered and nationally acclaimed musicians. While previous festivals have featured classic rock, this year the festival looks firmly toward the future with artists who are poised to continue making an impact on their respective genres for years to come, including festival headliners The Black Lillies on June 9 and Dr. Dog on June 10. In another change from previous years, admission is free. The festival will be held at A.K. Bissell Park.

The Black Lillies began as a group of friends making music in songwriter and frontman Cruz Contreras’ Knoxville living room, and have evolved into what is now one of Americana’s biggest success stories: an internationally-renowned band of roots-rockers, armed with songs that […]

Nasty Women Art Exhibit Opens June 2!

The idea of the Nasty Women Art Exhibit was borne from a group of artists who wanted to show solidarity for women’s rights. The first exhibit was at a warehouse in Brooklyn in January 2017 and served as a fundraiser for women’s health, raising over $43,000 for the cause.

Since then Nasty Women exhibits have spread throughout the globe. Check out the map of exhibits here. News outlets from Newsweek and Huffington Post have covered the movement.

The immediate and enthusiastic feedback to this first NASTY WOMEN Exhibition has led to an outcropping of sister exhibitions in different cities across the globe. So far, this list of iterations ranges from Nashville, Lexington, Portland, and Omaha to Brussels and Melbourne, with more than a dozen locales in between. While these exhibitions will be linked ephemerally by social media and press, Jackson and Fiore are encouraging organizers to “bring their own spirit” to the shows, which includes supporting whatever women’s rights organization or nonprofit they see fit. – Via The Creators Project (VICE)

The Knoxville Nasty Women Art Exhibit is opening June 2. Currently, the Basement Community Arts Studio, Lox Salon, and the Body Mind Realign & Gratitude Bar will be hosting artists and accepting donations for the Family Justice Center of Knoxville and Girls Rock Camp of Knoxville. They are hoping to add more Old City Venues to the list of hosting spaces as well. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of artwork will go to these charities that support and empower women.

They are still accepting work from artists so please help them spread the word! Artists can submit here.

“David Francisco’s life was permanently changed last April when a distracted driver ran a red light and T-boned him while he was riding his bike home from the world-renowned Blackbird Academy in Nashville, where he was studying music production. The initial spinal cord injury prognosis was devastating and landed the 24-year old singer/songwriter at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta fighting to regain his ability to walk while longing with deep desire to make music again.

During Grammy week this year, MusiCares honored Francisco at their Annual Gala Benefiting the MusiCares Foundation®. ”David is an extraordinary young man,“ said Debbie Carroll, Senior Executive Director of MusiCares. ”He has faced one of the biggest challenges one could ever face.”David’s music is a combination of acoustic and R&B reminiscent of Ben Rector, John Mayer and John Legend. His songs reflect real life stories and emotions that connect with listeners. Herb Trawick, ex-music industry executive and co-host/producer of the Pensados Place said ”David’s a star…he’s not trying to be…but he’s got all the stuff that makes you special.”

Also featuring host Hallerin Hilton Hill and special guests multi-Dove award winning artist Cindy Morgan and James Trimble of The Dirty Guv‘nahs.

Come prepared to be inspired by music, film and story.”  -Via Bijou Theatre Website

“Josh “DJ Shadow” Davis had already been experimenting with making beats and breaks on a four-track recorder while he was in high school in the Nor-Cal college town of Davis, but it was during university that he co-founded his own Solesides label as an outlet for his original tracks. Hooking up with Davis’ few b-boys (including eventual Solesides artists Blackalicious and Lyrics Born) through the college radio station, Shadow began releasing the Hip-Hop Reconstruction mix tapes in 1991, eventually catching the attention of The Source magazine and Dave Funkenklein.  Shadow was featured in the magazine’s “Unsigned Hype” column in 1991, and Klein signed him to a production deal with Hollywood BASIC records.  Concurrently, Shadow provided beats and scratches for Bay Area rapper Paris and was featured on his second album.  In 1993, Shadow pressed his 17-minute beat-head symphony “Entropy.” His tracks spread widely through the DJ-strong hip-hop underground, eventually reaching James Lavelle of Mo’ Wax.” – Via DJ Shadow Website
