This weekend the 13-9 Tennessee Vols will face the 16-6 Alabama Crimson Tide in the baseball version of the infamous ‘Third Saturday of October’.

The Vols enter the game having lost their last three games, two to Ole Miss in Oxford and a home game Tuesday to ETSU.

However, this does not mean UT does not have some momentum entering the game.

They have scored six runs in two of their last four games and have seen significant advances at the plate from underclassmen Brandon Trammell who hit his second home run while going 2-5 and driving in three runs as well as Jay Charleston who would go 4-5 against ETSU driving in two runs.

The Vols also come into this game with five players batting better than .280 and nine players batting better than .200.

UT has not had very much trouble at the plate this year save a few games, which is to be expected in baseball, the issue for the Vols has been the mound.

Tennessee comes into the series with a 4.28 team ERA and not a single one of the three projected weekend starters boasts an ERA below 3.oo.

Meanwhile The Tide enter the series also having lost their last three games, one to UAB and two to UGA.

However, unlike the Vols, Alabama will bring 15 players to Knoxville who are hitting over .200 and nine of those are hitting over .300.

Bama will also be trotting out an early year candidate for conference player of the year in Chandler Avant who is batting .391.

He has started all 22 of the Tides games, has two HR’s, nine doubles and has batted in 26 runs already this year.

The Tide also roll into Knoxville with a team ERA of just 3.06 and one of their three weekend starters, Garrett Rukes, even allows just one single earned run on average.

It should be a good series with a lot of competition, even with both teams entering the series having lost three in a row. However, Alabama clearly has the advantage and will therefore take two of three or look to sweep UT in Knoxville.
