For the first time since 1970, one of college football’s most storied rivalries will return to its traditional roots, with Tennessee’s orange and Alabama’s crimson filling Neyland Stadium as both teams look to wear their home uniforms.

On August 19, both teams announced they will wear their home uniforms in Knoxville for the 2026 campaign and in 2027 when they meet in Tuscaloosa. This agreement between both parties will reinstate a tradition that made this rivalry special.

The tradition of Tennessee and Alabama both wearing their home uniforms dates back to the early history of the rivalry, but came to an end after the 1970 matchup, where the Vols defeated Alabama 24-0 in front of their home crowd in Knoxville.

Their 2026 clash will feel awfully familiar as Tennessee will enter its home stadium in its iconic orange, an identity marker for the program. Alabama will arrive in enemy territory wearing their traditional crimson threads instead of the white jerseys that are commonly worn by visiting teams.

Although both teams wearing home uniforms during the contest is a longstanding tradition, their 2027 meeting will mark the first time in history that Tennessee will don its signature orange in Bryant-Denny Stadium. This is due to decades of Alabama’s home games in the series being played in Birmingham instead. The showdown returned to Tuscaloosa in 1999; however, the tradition had already come to a halt nearly 30 years prior.

This is more than just bringing back a trend for a rivalry game. Home uniforms in the world of college sports are incredibly important as they carry tradition, symbolism, and are key to the identity of the programs. The reinstatement of this tradition could raise this rivalry to new levels of intensity as both programs will look to represent their true colors with pride.

Tennessee has won the previous two matchups at Neyland Stadium and will look to continue this trend while representing its passionate fanbase and the orange that brings them together.

The upcoming installment of this rivalry has the opportunity to bring fans together to embrace and celebrate this tradition. Fans of this classic tradition will be able to view it in the modern day, while new fans will be able to view a unique chapter of this rivalry that could spark the idea to stick around for years to come.

With two historic programs wearing two iconic uniforms, the ensuing two editions of the Third Saturday in October will write a new chapter in one of the oldest rivalries in SEC history.
